Barbecue

July 2011

The rain held off until mid-afternoon, by which time we had eaten our barbecued chicken, pork and sausages accompanied by some delicious salads and, of course, followed by strawberries and cream.

As Malcolm was away in foreign parts, the event was relocated to Paul and Heather's garden. Some photos can be seen by clicking here.

Our thanks to all who worked so hard to make the day possible.

The Twinning Visit to Chassieu took place between 25 and 29 May 2011. For details of what happened and some accompanying pics click here

The Twinning Visit from Chassieu took place at the beginning of June. The volcanic ash did not after all prevent our guests from arriving and they flew home on Sunday 6th June after a most enjoyable visit.

An Association Evening was held on Friday 19th March at the Town Hall. There was an excellent talk (with slides) on canals and canal walks by an obvious expert in the field, the usual glass of wine and an opportunity to catch up with our friends. We must have enjoyed ourselves - there were still people there at half past 10.

As part of our programme, we went to a Concert at the newly-refurbished Butterworth Hall at Warwick Arts Centre on Saturday, 30 January at 8pm.

The concert started with Elgar's Cocaigne Overture, which paints a picture of the bustling London scene of Elgar's day. It continued with Mendelssohn's beautiful violin concerto and finished with Elgar's wonderfully written and very British Enigma Variations, which of course include the famous Nimrod Variation.

Vladimir Ashkenazy (the world-famous pianist) was conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra and the violin soloist was the young Canadian, James Ehnes. He played superbly.

It was a great concert and the thirty of us who went were delighted with our night out.

The traditional Christmas Concert, now in its 27th year, with our guests, the wonderful AD Concert Band was on Friday 11th December at 7:30 pm. The Town Hall was packed and a great time was had by all. The traditional punch and mince pies helped to warm things up even more during the second part!
Our very popular Quiz Night on Saturday 17th October at 7:30 pm. was sold out. A good time was had by all and we went to a tie-break in order to find the winners - a group of 4 illustrious and knowledgable persons consisting of Pam and Jim Thomson and their neighbours. Congratulations!

A Wine Tasting Evening - Friday, September 11th 2009

This was an evening where, led by our old friend Tony Souter, the oenologist, we tasted seven 'celebrity wines'. That is to say, wines made by celebrities.

Now you'd think that with all the money they can pour into their wine production that they'd produce some outstanding stuff. Well, some of them do. But not all of them. If you're a Cliff fan, my recommendation is to stick with his songs!

For me the hot tip of the night was the 'Vin de Pays d'Oc' Viognier made by Gérard Bertrand, the former French rugby player. I think that almost everyone thought that it was delicious. It is obtainable from Majestic Wine Warehouses at £5.49 each for a purchase of 2 bottles.

Barbecue - July 2009

This time, there was no rain !  Instead, we had a wondeful sunny day with a turnout of almost 70 members and friends.

A big thank you to all who organised the event and to Malcolm and Anita for hosting the barbecue in their garden.

These are a few photos from the 2005 Barbecue - which I think was the last time when it didn't rain !
